Turmeric and Pistachio Baklava

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ½ cups finely chopped pistachios
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp ground cardamom
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup honey
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp orange blossom water (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Bake at 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine chopped pistachios, sugar, turmeric, cardamom, and salt. Brush melted butter on one phyllo dough sheet and place it in the baking dish. Brush 6 more phyllo sheets with melted butter.
  3. Distribute half the pistachio mixture over the phyllo. Layer 6 more phyllo sheets with melted butter. Cover with the remaining pistachio mixture. Brush the remaining 6 phyllo sheets with melted butter and layer again.
  4. Cut 24 pieces of baklava with a sharp knife, cutting through to the bottom. Bake for 50 mins. In a medium saucepan, heat the honey, water, lemon juice, and orange blossom water. Simmer for 10 mins on low, stirring occasionally.
  5. After baking, sprinkle the honey mixture over the baklava. Cool fully. Serve at room temperature.
